Caring for exotic leather

Crocodile, alligator, lizard, snake and ostrich are among the most beautiful — and most delicate — leathers in fine footwear and accessories. Their scales, quills and natural grain need specialist care: ordinary shoe creams and waxes are too harsh and can dry out, stiffen or discolour exotic skins. That is exactly what Saphir Reptan is made for.

What is Saphir Reptan?

Saphir Reptan is a gentle, cream-based conditioner formulated by Saphir Médaille d'Or specifically for exotic and reptile leathers. It lifts away dirt, feeds the skin with nourishing oils to keep it supple, and revives its natural lustre — without the heavy waxes or solvents that damage delicate scales. A little goes a long way.

Which leathers is it for?

  • Crocodile & alligator
  • Lizard
  • Snake / python
  • Ostrich (including quill leg leather)
  • Other fine exotic and reptile skins

For smooth calf leather use Saphir Renovateur instead; for suede & nubuck see our Suede & Nubuck range.

How to use Saphir Reptan

  1. Clean — gently wipe the surface with a soft, dry cloth, working with the direction of the scales to lift dust.
  2. Apply — put a small amount of Reptan on a soft cloth and work it in with light, circular motions. Don't over-apply; exotic skins need very little.
  3. Rest — allow it to absorb for a few minutes.
  4. Buff — buff gently with a clean, soft cloth to bring up a natural shine.
  5. Repeat sparingly — a light treatment every few months keeps exotic leather supple and helps prevent cracking.

What to avoid

Never use standard pigmented shoe creams, hard waxes or solvent cleaners on exotic leather — they can lift scales, stiffen the skin or strip its finish. Keep exotic pieces away from prolonged heat and direct sun, and store them with a shoe tree or light stuffing to hold their shape.
