Saphir Renovateur β What It Does & How to Use It
If you own just one shoe-care product, make it Saphir Renovateur. It's the cornerstone conditioner in the MΓ©daille d'Or range β a βmust-haveβ in the arsenal of shoe lovers worldwide, and the first step in almost every care routine. Here's what it does and how to use it.
What is Saphir Renovateur?
Renovateur is a premium leather conditioner and reviver built around mink oil, lanolin and beeswax. It cleans lightly, deeply nourishes, and revitalises tired or dried-out leather β restoring suppleness and a soft, natural sheen. Crucially it is colourless, so it's safe on leather of any colour, from black calf to pale tan.
What does it do?
- Conditions & nourishes β replenishes the natural oils leather loses over time, keeping it supple.
- Prevents cracking β well-fed leather flexes instead of splitting, especially at the toe crease.
- Revives tired leather β brings life back to shoes that look dull or dry.
- Lightly cleans β lifts surface grime as you work it in.
- Adds a subtle sheen β a gentle, natural glow (build a higher shine afterwards with cream and wax).
Renovateur vs shoe cream β what's the difference?
They do different jobs and work together:
- Renovateur is a colourless conditioner β it feeds and revives the leather but adds no pigment.
- Pommadier cream is a pigmented polish β it restores colour and shine.
Use Renovateur first to condition, then cream to colour and shine. For choosing a cream shade, see our Saphir colour chart.
How to use Saphir Renovateur
- Clean first. Brush off dust with a horsehair brush; wipe away any old product.
- Apply a small amount with a soft cloth, working it into the leather in small circles. A little goes a long way β don't overload.
- Let it absorb for 15β30 minutes.
- Buff with a clean cloth or horsehair brush to bring up the sheen.
- Follow with cream and/or wax if you want added colour or a higher shine.
Classic Renovateur vs Renovateur with Macadamia Oil
The Renovateur cream comes in two versions:
- Classic Renovateur (75ml) β the everyday cornerstone conditioner for your whole rotation. A concentrated cream you work in by hand for full control.
- Renovateur with Macadamia Oil β the premium upgrade. It does everything the classic does, but the macadamia oil penetrates deeper into the leather, delivering extra nutrients for a richer feed and a fuller shine. Shoe-care specialists reserve the macadamia version for their best and most prized pieces, where that extra moisture and lustre is worth it.
For a whole collection, the classic Renovateur is the workhorse; for a special pair you want to pamper, reach for the Macadamia Oil version.
Prefer a lotion? Two lighter options
If you'd rather a lightweight lotion than a cream β quicker to apply and easily spread over larger areas β Saphir makes two conditioning lotions:
- Saphir Leather Lotion β a mink-oil-enriched lotion that nourishes and protects; an easy everyday conditioner, and gentle enough for more delicate leathers.
- Saphir Lotion Macadamia β a lightweight lotion enriched with macadamia oil for effortless application, deep moisture and flexibility.
Creams (Renovateur) give you more control and a richer feed; lotions trade a little of that for speed and easy coverage. Either keeps your leather conditioned.
How often should you use it?
As a rule of thumb, condition every 5β10 wears, or whenever the leather starts to feel dry. Shoes worn often, or exposed to sun and weather, will want it more regularly.
